10th Anniversary Concert ‘Metamorphosis’

On the 4th of February, our school held their 10th anniversary performance, ‘Metamorphosis’ at The Republic Polytechnic Cultural Centre. Among the many VIPs, we were honoured to have Dr Lim Wee Kiak, our Guest-of-Honour, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC, Mr Raymond Wong, the School Advisory Committee (SAC) Chairman, and Mr Tony Tan, the N5 Superintendent to grace the occasion. On that day, we, the student reporters from Creative Circle, arrived at the VIP Holding Room to receive the VIPs and have the opportunity to interview them.

What are your impressions of EVG's Metamorphosis Concert?

“I find it very refreshing and interesting to see the life of an Evergreen Secondary School student showcased through a play.”

After watching the entire concert, may I ask if you have any encouraging words for our aspiring EVGians?

"I am very proud of all the EVGians, and may there be many more good years to come."

Apart from interviewing the VIPs present, we also got to speak to the key figures who were responsible for organising and planning the concert. Hence, we sought out the Producer and Assistant Producer of ‘Metamorphosis’ and asked for their feelings on the overwhelming success of the concert.

After watching the entire concert, may I ask if you have any encouraging words for our aspiring EVGians?

"Of course, I hope that the students will continue to work hard for the skills needed for themselves when they leave the school for the adult world. "

Being the Assistant Producer of the Metamorphosis Concert, how do you feel in seeing your efforts pay off in the wake of its success?

"Even though I had helped out, the effort is not my own. It is through the coorperation between many teachers and staff, and the students have also put in an effort to make all of these possible."

How do you feel attending the first public performance of EVG?

I am excited even though it’s a school-organized concert. There are many performances in store and I am very eager to watch them.

I feel happy as it is a milestone for the school. It’s great that we have this concert to celebrate the 10th anniversary. However, I regret not having the opportunity to perform because I have graduated.

Which is the performance that you are most looking forward to?

I’m most looking forward to Mrs. Tan and Siti’s duet because Mrs. Tan seems like a fierce person in school, so it is quite unexpected that we would get to see her sing.

In particular, I look forward to the performance between Mrs. Tan and Siti because it’s not everyday that we get to hear our own EVGians singing with our discipline teachers.

What do you think of EVG’s choice in choosing RP as a venue for the concert?

I feel that the choice of venue was convenient as it’s located near our houses, hence, there is no need to waste money on transport.

I also thought that the choice of Republic Poly was good as the concert hall is air conditioned, creating a more comfortable environment for audience to enjoy the performances.

How do you feel being able to take part in the EVG 10th year anniversary concert?

I feel honoured to be able to have the chance to perform for the school’s 10th year anniversary. Since it’s my last year in Evergreen, I want to take part in some activities that contribute to the school.

What are the difficulties that you faced during the preparation?

We have also faced some difficulties during the rehearsals. One of them was learning the dance moves. As I cannot attend every single lesson, I had to struggle to catch up.

We have also faced quite a few difficulties. One of them was to get everyone to attend the daily practices. We had to ensure that students were coming for the practices. Another difficulty was memorizing the lyrics for the song.

If we manage to do our best, it would make the rehearsals worth it and make the performance all the more memorable.

1) What kind of obstacles did you overcome during your planning for Service Learning?

• Getting everyone to do their part during the service learning.

• While planning for my Service learning, my group went through some obstacles such as having difficulties to contact the organisation, thus delaying our planned project. It was also hard to arrange a time for the whole group to meet as we needed to find a suitable date whereby everyone can attend. I was very grateful and thankful that my group was successful in overcoming the problems and also completing the project.

Singapore Press Holdings Media Day Camp

An Enriching Experience to Singapore Press Holdings

On 14 and 15 June 2010, the Creative Circle members took part in a workshop organized by the Straits Times Media Club. The two-day agenda provided opportunities for students to be involved in many exciting activities besides honing their abilities in journalism.

These are the highlights of the programme:

On Day 1, Senior Vice President of the Singapore Press Holdings, Mr Peter Khoo, addressed the students on ‘The Newspaper Industry’. We were amazed as he shared with us interesting facts of the SPH centre like the revenue of advertisements they received per year. Then, we were given a talk by Ms Bertha Henson, the Associate Editor of Strait Times. Many were awed as she told her experiences reporting on a riot in Singapore a few decades ago. After that, we were divided into groups in the segment ‘Who are you in the Newsroom?’ Ms Serene Goh, the editor of IN, Little Red Dot and YouthINK, assigned the different groups to brainstorm on creative and innovative ideas.

We also took the opportunity to mingle with other students from different schools. There was also a session on news photography by Mr Bryan van der Beek, an Executive Photojournalist. We were grateful for the tips he gave on ways to take a good shot and we were fascinated by the marvelous pictures which he had taken before. The last segment for the day was on interviewing and reporting. Mr Marc Lim, the Assistant News Editor, also taught on how to be a good reporter. His advice was indeed useful as students practically used his tips during the interview with the special guest on the following day. We headed home afterwards, looking forward to the next day.

On Day 2, we were excited to go for a tour at the Strait Times and the Information Resource Centre. We got a sneak peek at the journalists’ workplace. When we got back to the News centre, we were star-struck by popular deejays, Jeremy Ratnam and Boy Thunder from Radio 91.3FM .

They were hilarious and we were very entertained with the games they held. The fun did not stop there. We even went to the Print Centre at 2 Jurong Port Road which prints, sorts and distributes 17 newspaper titles. We learn that the ink circulating system consists of more than 1.2km of piping! The last programme of the Straits Times Media Club Camp was the Press Conference with the world champion bowler, Remy Ong. Let’s hear on what Remy Ong had to say.

Q: What are your plans to help the future generation?

Remy: When I retired, I would like to be a coach in the national team. It is my dream to have my own bowling academy.

Q: Who is your bowling hero?

R: [looked stunned] I don’t have a bowling hero. But, I have some people who I looked up to like my family, coaches, my President and my federation.

Q: What is your most regretful moment?

R: I left school at the age of 16. It’s a big risk. Given another chance, I would not do it. Please do not do the same thing.

Q: How do you manage your time?

R: I have to manage my time well. I need to travel to other countries a lot of time. It’s a give and take thing. If you definitely love your family, find effort [to spend time with them].

Q: What is your motto in life?

R: It’s the word that I love and hate. Live my dream.

Odyssey of the Mind 2010

Odyssey of the Mind

In the month of April, two teams of students from Evergreen Secondary School participated in the Odyssey of theMind competition held annually at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). Every year, Odyssey of the Mind presents students new challenges to solve. These challenges include a long term problem where students in teams solve either technological conundrums or issues that involve performing and artistic approaches. It takes weeks and months for teams to solve. At the competition, there will be a ‘spontaneous’ round where teams will have to solve problems on the spot.

Having the experience of participation for two years, I have learnt to balance my studies and extracurricular activities. It has also boosted my confidence on stage as I feel that I am now a more self-assured speaker. Working with my team for months has also taught me teamwork and helped me in my leadership position as a prefect. There were a lot of sacrifices made by my team members and myself. Late nights and struggling to finish our homework were some of the difficulties that we had to overcome.

Nevertheless, the stress and pressure was the biggest fear we had to overcome. We were competing with top schools who were way more experienced than us. However we knew that we had done our best and our teachers were there to support us no matter what the score was. When the results were released, it was an improvement compared to last year. Our 1st team was ranked 7th out of 9 schools and our second team ranked 5th out of 6 schools.

Here are the thoughts of the team members on their whole experience.

‘I learnt how to be creative and how to think on the spot. I also learnt to have team communication,’ said Adam Tan from 3 Aspire. ‘However, the difficult problems were time management and team work.’

When asked about how it felt like competing with the top schools and in the spontaneous round, Siti Nur Afiqah from 2 Aspire said, ‘It is very intense having to come up with the answers right on the spot while at the same time being creative as I can.’

When asked about how it felt to compete with the leading schools of Singapore, Doralyn Geralyna Marsh from 4 Integrity replied, ‘Competing with them can be demoralising. But I joined Odyssey of the Mind because I love drama and thought I could be an asset in representing our school.’

All in all, our school’s Odyssey of the Mind will continue to grow and be a better and stronger team as the EVGians are passionate about drama and stage performance.

International Model United Nation Conference (IMUNc)

International Model United Nation Conference (IMUNc).

During the June holidays, most of our EVGians spent their time hanging out with friends, playing computer games, and even studying. However 12 of our students from the Debate club, NE ambassadors as well as the Good English Model (GEMS) attended a three day conference held at the Anglo Chinese School Independent (ACSI) known as the International Model United Nation Conference (IMUNc).

IMUNc is an annual high school Model United Nations Conference. In IMUNc, students get to experience being high-level delegates representing countries whereby they expose themselves to the features of international relations in the real world. IMUNc was definitely an exciting opportunity for our students to propose resolutions and respond to global issues.

This year's IMUNc featured councils like the [HGA-1994] General Assembly, 1994, whereby they discussed issues like the US Embargo on Cuba and the Rwandan Crisis, as well as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), whereby they brainstormed on issues like Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and Expansion and Relations with SCO. Not only did they do a lot of research for their respective issues, they also had to propose resolutions to solve those issues.

"Getting to know people from other schools and have a great learning experience together is indeed an eye-opener," says Nur Fariza Bte Juffri.

It was definitely not an all work and no play situation here. Our EVGians have gained a lot of experience, be it in the aspects of language, debating skills as well as getting to befriend students of other schools. They are indeed looking forward to going to their next conference in the up-coming year.

After the release of GCE O' Level Results

2010 Release of GCE 'O' Level Results

On 11 January 2010, our senior members of the school received the results for their GCE ‘O’ exams. Some were nervous, some were scared, and some were excited to receive their results. Our Creative Circle members interviewed some of the seniors before they received their results.

Before the results...

One of the seniors, Dayang Sofia bte Sofian, from 4 Achieve, told the reporters about her inner feelings before the results were given out.

“Nervous,…but I did try my best,” she said nervously.

Like Dayang, Nurul Afiqah from 4 Commitment told us that she too felt nervous and tried her best. She recalled how much sacrifices she made by doing daily revision months before 'O' Levels. When asked about what she thought her results would be like, Nurul Afiqah told the reporters, “I hope that I will score at least 15 points.”

We also interviewed and Lee Chea Huay from 4 Enterprise. “I feel nervous. And I didn’t really try my best. Now I am more nervous…and I don’t know what I will get,” she told our reporters.

However one of the seniors, Nurul Rafiqah, from 4 Aspire last year, told us about her emotions differently.

“I'm feeling excited because I know I had done my best…and I hope that I will pass every subject,” she told the reporters.

Our Creative Circle members also interviewed one of the seniors’ parents. We interviewed the father of Nurul Natasya and asked him about his feeling before his daughter had received her results. “Right now I have no answer yet. I’ll be patient. I’ll have to wait. I can’t express my feelings yet,” he told the reporters.

When asked about if his daughter did her best for her ‘O’ level exams, he replied “She studied until late at night ,and I think she had worked hard and deserved good results.”

After the release of GCE O'Level results, some students were euphoric with joy while others cried tears of sadness over their results. The reporters managed to interview a few students about their feelings after getting the results. Nurain Bte Mohd Zulkepli from 4 Aspire commented elatedly that she was relieved and excited upon receiving her results.However, Faiqah from 4Commitment said that she was sad over her results which did not meet her expectations.

Besides that, we also asked them on their future plans ahead which garnered a mix reaction. Xin Mei Rennie from 4 Aspire said that,'' Maybe I want to go to a Junior College.'' Kee Li Tian from 5 Dynamic aspired to be a musician or a performer. There were some students who were still deciding on which institutions they would be heading to as they had not made up their mind. As for Nurul Syarryzan Bte Suhaimi, she really hoped that her English result would get her into a JC.

We also interviewed some of the seniors and asked them about their results, and how they managed to get good results.

Xin Mei Rennie from 4 Aspire told us that studying and hard work is the key to success. She managed to get 10 points for her ‘O’ level results.

Shaun Lee Ching Lun told the reporters that he managed to get 16 points for his results. Marvon Tan from 4 Achieve and Kee Li Tian from 5 Dynamic managed to get 16 points each for their results.

Marvon Tan, from 4 Achieve, told us that he wanted to go to a polytechnic and he did ok for his ‘O’ level examination.

Our reporters also met Jia Yi from 4 Aspire. “I had problems such as lack of sleep in order to study for my exams, and I had to miss some of my Chinese Orchestra’s practices to attend some lessons,” she told the reporters. "But it was all worth it!"

As the students were exchanging words of encouragement and congratulating one another, we would like to hear their shout-outs and messages of gratitude to the special ones. Kee Li Tian expressed his appreciation to the teachers who had put in their hard work especially Mr Joseph Teo. Jia Yi from 4 Aspire, would want to thank Mr Edward the most. ''He is very experienced in teaching and I look up to him.''

As for Zakiah Binte Ishak, she was grateful for Mdm Norhayati who showed moral support for all the subjects. On average, most students stated that they would miss the food in the school canteen, friends and teachers the most when they graduated from Evergeen Secondary School.

The key to success is hardwork. Evergreen is proud to say that there is a huge improvement in the GCE ‘O’ level this year. We even had a half day for the school on the 18 of January, to celebrate the success that our school had achieved. As EVGians, we have to Aspire and Achieve.

We would like to give our well-wishes to all the students who have received their O'Level results and hopefully, they can live up to their dreams.

Youth Olympic Games (YOG)

In addition to what happens in our school, we also have a special segment called “Whaaaaaaat’s what?” where we write about the latest happenings, that we, teenagers enjoy.

In addition to the current Youth Olmypic Games happening in August, there has also been a music video created to lift the spirits up for the youth athletes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfXOysuoUoI . The song is sung by our very own Tabitha Nauser, Europe’s Steve Appleton, Jessica Mauboy from Oceania, Jody William from Africa and Sean Kingston from America. This song is written and composed by Singapore Idol’s favourite judge, Ken Lim. It signifies the athlete’s ability to believe in themselves and move on no matter how hard things get. In our opinion, this song is really meaningful to not only our athletes, but also youths aspiring to achieve their dreams.

Also, this year’s National Day Celebration is coming up and the music video is out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVF_WClXXQc This year's National Day song is sung by Corrinne May with her very choir like voice. In it, features the students who will be performing in the National Day Parade as the human LCD. We are very fortunate to have sent our students to represent our school and are definitely proud of them. In our opinion, this years song really encourages us to really stand up for Singapore.

Visit From Our Friends From Chang Chun

Our school had a visit from our international friends from Chang Chun, China. Some of our EVGians who went to Chang Chun last month, became our special guests’ buddies to guide them during their stay here. From the looks of the faces of our delighted guests, our reporters could see how excited they were coming to Singapore and Evergreen Secondary for the first time.

One of the Chang Chun students, Li Xin Chi, was being interviewed by our reporters about her stay here. “My stay here is very good, even though the temperature here is hotter than in China, and the lessons are quite hard for me to understand,” she commented.

Xin Chi also claimed that her buddy, Jennifer Gita Cahyani from 3 Enterprise, was friendly to her and treated her nicely.

Chinese was the lesson she enjoyed the most, since it was the only subject she could understand.

She hopes to learn more about Singapore’s heritage and hope that she could come here again so that she could help to enhance the friendship ties between us. She also found the environment here different, yet heart-warming.

When asked what similarities she found out between here and China, she replied, “There are some lessons, like Mathematics, which are quite alike to the lessons we learn back in China.”

Throughout their Immersion Trip, EVGians have showed hospitality to the Chang Chun students. The friendships that they have forged with EVGians grew closer from the exciting and yet educational activities during their trip here. Their warm smiles will always be cherished by Evergreen students. The Creative Circle reporters look forward to meet the Chang Chun students again for the following year.

CCA Open House

'' The Sec 1 orientation was well-organised!'' commented Suresh, parent of Nowen Nair from 1 Character. The Secondary 1 CCA orientation which was held on the 9th of January was crowded with parents, CCA members promoting their CCA and of course, the students. Students, along with their parents, went to various CCA booths to choose the best CCA that suits their children as all parents want the best for their children. For example, Hamidah thinks that her daughter, Siti Nazirah of 1 Integrity, should join sports so that she could be active.

We also managed to interview some CCA members and asked on how they felt on the Sec 1 orientation. Nurul Sofia from 3 Respect said, '' We are happy to be involved because we get to interact and enable them to learn more about NCDCC.'' ''We are also able to promote NCDCC to the Sec 1s and their parents. Through this, we hope that the Sec 1s are interested and will join our CCA,'' continued Nadirah from 3 Enterprise. Both of them are Sergeants from NCDCC. Besides that, Nur Farhana of 3 Achieve, CCA leader of Malay Dance, thinks that, '' It is interesting and encouraging as many CCA leaders are putting up their best effort to encourage the Sec 1s to join their CCA.''

When asked what they think of Evergreen Secondary School, James, parent of Jamie Tang of 1 Integrity said, '' It's a very organised school with good programmes.'' Likewise for Lee KS whose son, Lee Zhen Yu from 1 Enterprise, who opted Evergreen Secondary School as his 2nd choice, also praised Evergreen for its interesting activities and well-behaved, disciplined students.

Julaiha, mum of Nur Diana, from 1 Respect will definitely put her younger daughter in Evergreen Secondary School as '' Evergreen is a very good school because of its achievements and the students are very well-behaved''.

Racial Harmony Day

Whenever people think of Racial Harmony Day, they would think of wearing their traditional clothes. However the EVGians did not.

This year, our school celebrated Racial Harmony Day by having a ‘Mind your Language’ skit. The play was about foreigners who have come to Singapore and integrate as part of our community. We learnt that we should communicate by speaking proper English and not Singlish.

We enjoyed the skit as they showed us how we can make friends of other nationalities despite our differences. We also learnt the importance of speaking good English to gel people together and communicate better.

On that day, our visitors from Chang Chung also watched it with us and they enjoyed the skit too. They even took pictures while the play was going on. They would be involved in school activities for three days and some of us got to know them better by talking to them. They got to learn about what National Education is and celebrated Racial Harmony with us.

In this way, we had celebrated Racial Harmony with people from different countries. Hence it is more meaningful and helps us to remember this event even better. After this event, we are looking forward to next year’s Racial Harmony Day. Hopefully, there will be visitors from other countries coming here again.

MONGOLIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

On 3rd February 2010, the Creative Circle reporters had the golden opportunity to interview the Mongolian students, who were in Evergreen Secondary School for the early preparations on the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

They were invited to perform during our the 10th Anniversary celebration at The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC). Our guests presented an impressive solo cultural dance and they even harmonized and sung a Mongolian song as part of the opening act for the 10th Anniversary Performance, 'Metamorphosis.'

What are your first thoughts of Singapore when you first reached here?

Purevswren Mongolian Exchange Student: I am quite happy to be in Singapore.

Chultem Otgonbaatar, President of Sukhbaatar District Olympic Council:

I am very happy to meet the Olympic Committee officials in Singapore.

Which places in Singapore would you most like to visit?

Purevswren: As I like animals, I look forward to visit the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari.

Chultem Otgonbaatar: I am interested to go to Sentosa Island.

Have you tried out any of our local food yet? If yes, do you like it?

Chultem Otgonbaatar: Yes, we've already tried out Singapore's seafood at the hotel. But we didn't like it because Mongolians are not used to spicy food.

Purevswren: Our staple food is normally rice and potatoes.

Sato: We eat more meat like beef or mutton.

How do you feel about helping out in ushering the Mongolian Exchange Students?

Daniel Tan, Prefect: We needed to help each other out and the bond between us really taught us the importance of working together to get things working.

Yang Qing Yang, Usher: I believe that we can gain much knowledge about the Mongolian culture and have the opportunity to meet and interact with these Mongolian students.

What is your impression of the Mongolian visitors?

Daniel Tan: These students who came to Singapore are indeed very sporty and obviously adept at sports.

Yang Qing Yang: They are very quick learners and immediately took to various traditional games of Singapore which we introduced to them.

Were there any difficulties which you encountered in your contact with the Mongolian students?

Daniel Tan: It was quite hard to communicate because of our language barrier.

Yang Qing Yang: They were shy at first. But after getting to know them better, they opened up to us and were very friendly.

How do you plan to prepare for the competition while you’re here in Singapore?

Manli: We plan to prepare for the competition by resting and conserving energy so that we can be prepared mentally and physically.

What are your hopes for the YOG 2010?

Manli: I hope that we can do really well for the YOG 2010. I hope we can do our best and we aim to work really hard for the competition.

We also had the opportunity to have a brief interview with Mr Albert Teo, Olympic Ambassador of Mongolian NOC.

What are some of the events that you will be taking part in for the YOG 2010?

Mr Albert Teo: Some of the competitions we are taking part in are Judo, Boxing and Archery.

What do you hope to achieve during this exchange program?

Mr Albert Teo: Our main aim for this exchange program is to establish friendships with Singapore schools. Through this event, locals will get to know our culture better and hence can make friends with our Mongolian students.

Dialogue Session with Mdm. Shao

On 19 January 2010, a group of Higher Chinese Language Secondary 3 and 4 students had a dialogue session with Madam Shao Rong, the Vice Principal of Wuxi Dong Lin Middle School from China. Madam Shao was on a school visit here. She left on the 28 January.

During the dialogue session, Madam Shao shared some of her observations with the students, particularly drawing the differences between the education system of Singapore and China. She was especially impressed with the good discipline displayed by EVGians. She noted that the EVGians have always demonstrated passionate commitment in their academic learning and Co-Curricular activities.

Being an enthusiastic learner, Madam Shao also shared with the students her learning journey in mastering the English Language. In the globalisation age of today, she remarked on the importance of being effectively bilingual and encouraged the students to seek every opportunity to learn and master their Mother Tongue.

Exclusive Interview with Mdm Shao: “A Strict Master will Educate Great Apprentices”

Early this January, Evergreen Secondary School had the honour of having Vice-principal, Mdm Shao Rong from Wuxi Middle School on a three weeks’ visit. Hann Shen and Amira had the privilege to have a brief but enlightening interview with Mdm Shao.

What was your first impression of EVG?

I am very impressed with Evergreen Secondary School. What caught my attention would be mainly the facilities, teachers and students as well as the Co-curricular Activities (CCA).

Your school is indeed very clean and beautiful. I feel that the layout of the school is very well-designed and it has many supporting facilities such as the Library and Computer Laboratories.

Secondly, students are well behaved during lessons. They are keen learners and are very capable. I can see that they are motivated and eager to learn. Other than that, I think that the teachers are wonderful. They are strict but kind. That is very important as there is a saying “A strict master will educate great apprentices.” They are also experienced teachers who have good teaching strategies like Cooperative Learning.

In terms of CCA activities, I think that they are very fantastic. There is such a wide variety that all students can select one to meet their interests.

Our school is a National Education centre. On your visit here, have you learnt more about Singapore’s history from the different corners in our school?

Yes, I have and I feel that “the walls in this school talk”. By just taking a walk around the school, I learnt much historical facts that I have not known before I came to Singapore.

Are there any similarities between your school in Wuxi Middle School and Evergreen Secondary School?

My school is more academic-oriented as a whole. In terms of CCA, only the lower secondary has two years of CCA. On the other hand, your school emphasises on holistic education. Every child has an opportunity to take up a CCA and the choice of CCA is really varied. I really feel that your school has a better holistic education. I believe that the students here have a meaningful and fulfilling life as a student in Evergreen Secondary School.

I welcome readers onto the face of this blog with the open arms of 2010, welcome to Evergreen Secondary School! Or at least the digital side, that is. May I also extend my warm greetings towards all the other members of Creative Circle? This is William Heng Wei Chuan, recently recruited into the CCA, it is an honour to work with all of you. I know some members who are involved in Creative Circle, Marianne and Hann Shen, for instance. To my knowledge, they are great people, and I hope my time spent in the CCA will be a fruitful and enjoyable one. Of course, it will be.

Year 2010 is upon us, fellow readers, it would be such a waste if we do not properly utilise such precious time, wouldn't you agree? Did anyone take the time to plan your future and set your New Year's Resolutions yet...?

Resolutions are a lost man's solutions
Even when the last minute of 2009 draws to a close, many will still be thinking, perhaps regretting, face turning solemn at the tragic thought of the numerous unaccomplished goals we had set out to achieve that year. Or may hap, will you be rejoicing at a good year well-spent? No matter your stand, it is always advisable to look forward. Ponder not over the raindrops that fell during the lonesome night, but at the warm sun that emerges at dawn.

Since it's still early on in the year, it might be good to think about what you can do before the wave of melancholy returns again when 31st December 2010 arrives. Have you set your resolutions for this year? Perhaps if you don't feel close enough to me to tell me of those wishes yet, it's alright, just think about them to yourself. But just in case anyone already has a marvelous first impression of me and wants to tell me more of your resolutions, you're welcomed to ask for an email address or share your resolutions on the tagboard.

Anyway, onwards.

Since this is the school's newsletter after all, how about we start the ball rolling by trying to guess what the school's goals are? It may be overkill to use the word 'guess', with the amount of emphasis the school has placed on the recently released 'O' Level results, I might as well say, "read out what the school's goals are". Yes, a school is a place where students learn. A school is, after all, made up of its students, teachers, and many other features. In other words, a school is there for us students. Needless to say, the aspirations of a school would be to produce all-rounded students who are efficient and conscientious workers. My point is, one resolution which should definitely exist on our list, is to strive towards excellence and make our educational institute proud.

The interests of the school aside, like I said, a school is made up of students, and it would not make sense if the personal interests of the students were not taken care of. As mentioned earlier, I asked about what your resolutions are. If you have not at least thought of them even after my first cue, here's your second. Get your brains grinding, or do you need more conviction?

It would not be fair if I am over here saying that people should have resolutions of their own while I do not even breathe a word about my own New Year's Resolutions, would it? Hence, if you need inspirations to get yourself started and wish to read my resolutions, go on, I invite you to read ahead. However, if you don't wish to read the resolutions of a writer whom you may not have even heard of, that's alright, every one man is entitled to his own opinion... But just read on anyway.

Since I'm in one of the graduating classes this year, I will be prioritising academics at the very top of the stack. This will be be the first ingredient into my cauldron, but you can be sure that a sweet-smelling broth isn't made by just throwing in gigantic lumps of sugar.

As people like to say, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." From my point of view as a student, you can rest assure that I will absolutely not condemn having fun, be it the 'O' Levels, 'N' Levels, or 'A' Levels that is looming. As for me, I really hope that I can improve on my basketball skills, I have not really got the reverse layup right yet...disappointing. Like so, this will stay on my list of New Year's Resolutions, seeing that enjoying life is an integral part of, well, life.

What's next? First, please let me say some of my heartfelt thoughts on the relationships between people of which we Singaporeans have adapted to. Thrown into a modern metropolis with living costs shooting through the roof, one cannot deny the stress we must all face in today's fast-paced society. A few examples are glaringly obvious enough, with the lack of land, Singapore's housing costs gradually takes up more and more of the people's paycheck. Inclusive of these would also be transport, utilities, health-care and others. But since I'm not conducting a Social Studies or Economics class here, let's just leave the list at that.

Right. With the working population bearing the full brunt of the economic impact, stress levels will receive a guaranteed rise, and relationships will sour. It is during such times when the bonds between people are tested to its snapping point, and more often than not, the result is not positive. When humans, like everyone of us, feels immensely pressurised, we tend to focus all our attention towards the pressing matter at hand and then conveniently forget about other more minor, but just as significant aspects of living. Material gains will gain dominance over family ties, incentives and competitive motivation may have some to forsake friendship. The end product is often viewed upon as success, but it is when the saying "You have everything but nothing." starts to apply aptly on you that you realised object-oriented success isn't what you really want.

Talking so much makes me seem like I'm digressing, but not to worry, I'm not. I was just building up to my ultimate message, my final resolution of the New Year would be to strengthen the ties between me and my family, friends, teachers, and why not include the whole community as well? Healthy relationships between people are the basis for all sources of happiness. Bear this in mind with all your heart, no amount of tears would help if there is no one to bring the smile back to your face. No number of New Year Resolutions would shine its guiding light on you if you do not first handle your core issues well.

GOOD ENGLISH MODELS (GEM) PROGRAMME

From the month of August, GEMs have been looking forward to every Wednesday. This is the day we get to meet our favourite facilitators, Maia, Jack & Rai together with Ms. Mazlinda. This programme is really unique as we get to spend one-on-one time with the facilitators! Maia is really kind and affable. She makes sure everybody feels comfortable during the lesson. Jack & Rai, on the other hand, crack us all up with humorous jokes that make the session very enjoyable. We initially thought that the workshops would be the typical "lecture-type" but we were wrong. There were many interactive sessions and our facilitators work closely with us so as to groom us into Good English Models.

We have learnt several key lessons such as Public Speaking and Blogging. We have also learnt how to get over our stage fright. There was a session where we had to present our passion. From there, we managed to know each other better and witness some of their special talent. There was singing, there was rubik's cube solving and many more.

We love the ice-breakers in every session where we get to work in groups and compete with one and another. Ironically, it really bonded the GEMs family and brought us closer together. The weekly prize is a star sticker for each of the winning member. All of us are hoping to collect as many stars as possible because the one who does, wins the Overall Champion Award.

We are now on an examination break but the programme will resume in the month of November. We miss our fellow GEMs and we can't wait for the next workshop to start.

Channel News Asia: Roving DV

Roving DV is a nation-wide competition organized by Channel News Asia where student reporters shoot a news clip about their life in school and have the chance to broadcast it on television.

Creative Circle has submitted 2 video clips for the past 2 years. In 2007, our student reporters covered the brilliant concept of combining two subjects, Literature and Music (LITMUS) based on the Indian epic, Rayamana. This clip was selected to be aired on the news.

In 2008, our student reporters covered the much-anticipated, National Education Festival. Watching this clip brings back wonderful memories of the school’s transformation into a colourful palette of energy and exuberance.

Every time we hear of stories about leadership being told, we think of amazing people who have made major changes in people’s lives. We think of famous people who have influenced the society and the world. But what actually inspires these people to embark further on their leadership journey? What really makes one person be able to influence and lead a group of people in his society? Firstly, I believe that a leader makes the change in himself before changing others. They must undergo an important process in life that everyone should go through in order to achieve their goals. A process called ‘Metamorphosis.’

As a leader, I have learnt a lot through the years. However, I did not just simply learn from every lesson. I took it a step further by willing to apply and make the change in myself based on what I have learnt. Yes, indeed we can have all the knowledge of leadership we need in our heads, but what makes us different is whether we have the heart to change ourselves and apply our knowledge. It is not just about seeking knowledge, instead, it is about the applying the knowledge acquired, that matters more.

In Secondary One, all I ever thought of as a Prefect was to do my best in everything I had. I did not set specific goals, and neither did I tell myself who I wanted to become two years later. True enough, things went smoothly and as per normal, but in the end, I felt that I lacked something. I felt that something was missing, something in my life as a student leader was incomplete. And so, I soon came to figure out that goals and aspirations were what I lacked the most. Thus, I sought out to make the change. I told myself who I wanted to be, where I want to go, and how I will get there. That was when the first stage of Metamorphosis occurred in my leadership journey.

After being promoted to Secondary Two, I knew that I had no more time to waste. It was my time to shine, my time to succeed, and my time to achieve. I started observing people’s mistakes and learned from them. Indeed, as a human, I committed my fair share of mistakes. However, only by learning from them, can we grow stronger as a leader in our society. Committing a mistake is a necessary evil in this winding journey that we call Leadership. Also, as a leader, I learnt the most important value that I lacked: Heart. I truly believe a leader without heart is a leader who has no followers. I realized that I should not think of how I can lead better, instead I should think of how to lead, so that I can serve my people better. It was an eventful year full of ups and downs, but when I said goodbye to Secondary Two, I was certain it was not regret, but it was actually a lesson, that I can put to good use when I reach Secondary Three. True, there were much more downs than ups in my Secondary Two leadership journey, but I personally do not believe that they were letdowns. They were actually personal wake-up calls for me to strive and work doubly hard in order to achieve what I aspire for.

Thus, when I reached Secondary Three, I applied every single lesson that I have learnt over my past few years and used them to make myself a better person in whole. Secondary Three, I knew, was not a time for me to slip up. It was the time for me to pull myself higher from the ground. I could feel a significant change occurring within me. I felt that I have grown a lot as a leader since I first first started out in Secondary One. Finally, I was prepared to take on a higher leadership responsibility.

I believe that my leadership journey is strongly related to Metamorphosis. When a person is not willing to make the change in himself, he will never get better. I have gone through and learnt a lot from every challenge, but what’s important was that I made that change in myself before wanting to change others. This process of Metamorphosis has taught me a lot. It is hard, challenging and definitely not just a stroll in the park. However, if you persevere through, you will evolve to be a much better leader in life. Metamorphosis does not make an individual better than others, neither does it make you different in society. I believe that Mtamorphosis makes you unique and special in your own way.

Signing of Memorandum of Understanding between Evergreen Secondary and Shanghai Foreign Language School

On the 20th April 2009, our Principal, Mr Chan, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS). The signing ceremony took place during the Shanghai-Singapore Principals’ Roundtable Forum held in SFLS, witnessed by many key education personnel. The establishment of partnership with SFLS reflects Evergreen’s commitment to prepare our students for the increasingly globalized world.

Following the signing of the MOU, Evergreen Secondary will be sending the first batch of 40 students to Shanghai Foreign Language School this coming June holidays. This immersion trip will allow students to broaden their horizons and obtain a first hand experience of the rapid pace of China’s development. The experience will also allow students to gain awareness of another culture which will contribute to their unique educational experience in Evergreen Secondary. In turn, we will host the visit from students and teachers of SFLS in July.

We look forward to the success of our partnership with Shanghai Foreign Language School.

Evergreen Secondary welcomes distinguished visitors from Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS)

On the 9th April, distinguished guests from Shanghai Foreign Language School, led by the vice-principal, Mr Zhao Junning, visited Evergreen Secondary School.

Shanghai Foreign Language School is one of the most prestigious middle schools in the city of Shanghai. It has groomed many outstanding individuals who hold key positions in government as well as in the private sectors. One of the most notable alumni is the current Foreign Minister of China, Mr Yang Jiechi. It is indeed a special honour to be able to establish a partnership with the Shanghai Foreign Language School.

Our honoured guests were received warmly by our principal, Mr Chan Yew Wooi, and our vice-principals, Mr Lee Teck Wah and Mrs Theresa Lim. During the visit, details of the partnership between the two schools were discussed.

In addition, staff of Evergreen Secondary shared with our guests on the initiatives and programmes in our school. Mdm Komathi, Head of the English Department, shared on the teaching of English Language in Evergreen Secondary. Mr Tyrus Chua, our Research Activist, shared on the Debate Programme, an English Department Teach Less Learn More (TLLM) Ignite innovation.

The guests were impressed with the values that the school adopts, particularly the value of respect, due to its relevance in the current context of an increasingly globalized world. They were also impressed with the achievements of our staff and students in national competitions.

Our Sec 1 Archeological Trail Experience

Archeological Trail

On the 1st April, Sec 1 Aspire, Achieve and Dynamic students went for an Archaeological Trail. The rest of the Sec 1 classes got to participate on the trail on other days. Sounds exciting, don't you think? The instructors taught us many ways or methods archaeologists use to excavate things.

Archaeology is not just about "digging". It is the process where archaeologists excavate and discover historical items plus finding out the information about them. This is the first time Sec 1 classes get to know, learn and experience the life of an archaeologist. Archaeology is not just about History. We also need the skills in Geography and Maths to understand Archaeology as we need to use protractor to measure the length and height of the artefacts and map-reading skills to locate the artefacts. It was fun and educational at the same time. In fact, during the trail, we felt as if we were archaeologists ourselves!

The five stations have taught us the importance of archeological processes and analysis of artefacts. One of the favourite stations was, the 'Garbage Station.' There, we learnt about the earliest artefacts and the lastest artefacts. We played an interesting game where we were separated into three groups and explored the chronological sequence of artefacts.

The highlight of the Learning Journey was when we were given the chance to discover the artefact on our own. It was a hands-on learning experience where we were able to apply how to break open a clay container to reveal an artefact. We were taught to carefully wash and dust the precious item and the best part was,we got to keep it!

We hope that there will be more chances for us to participate in future trails.

Bintan Trip

My reflection on Bintan Trip- 5th to 8th March 2009

I must say that this Bintan Trip was a very priceless, adventurous and fun experience for me. I went there as a Student Leader with my dearest D.I.C.E team, fellow Secondary 2 Normal Technical students and wonderful teachers.
The main purpose of this trip was Service-Learning. I got to witness dear EVGians scraping and painting the walls enthusiastically. This really impressed me and warmed my heart. The Indonesian kids could not stop smiling when they saw us. This thought really pleased me and motivated me even further as I painted the walls. I had realized that the source of happiness does not have to come from a big achievement. It could the simple and little things that could make our day. The sweat and hard toil, paid off.

On the other hand, I got to try the high elements like climbing coconut trees and Flying-Fox. If words could describe how I felt at that time, I guess I would be speechless. I recalled the moment I tried to close my eyes and jumped down from the boat during ‘Boom-Netting’. I always thought that I was afraid of heights, but no, in fact, I was actually afraid of falling. I just needed to take one more step to enjoy the split seconds of conquering fear. I was so glad that I did it. I must thank the instructors for giving us clear instructions so to ensure that it was safe when we tried to attempt it.

This Bintan Trip was also an opportunity for me to strengthen bonds with my teachers and friends. Though the hygiene may not be as good as what we have in Singapore, I believe all of us had fun there. It was definitely a good learning experience. I mean, where can you get to experience all of these? Their lives are carefree and easy. Somehow, it was amazing that I was out of touch with technology for 4 full days and I did it without groaning. This shows how much I have enjoyed myself in this trip.

I will remember every single bit of memory of this trip because it was so amazing!

The Bridge Project: The Winter's Tale

The Winter's Tale

On 28 of March 2009, the Creative Circle members and selected Sec 1 Literature students got a special treat as we got to watch a play at a world-class facility, Esplanade-Theatres on the bay, with Miss Mazlinda, Mr Sam Soo, Ms. Ho Wei Ling, Ms Loola, Mr Shahril and even the HOD of English Language/Literature, Mdm Kesavan.

It was the much-anticipated Bridge Project, The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare – directed by none other than Sam Mendes. The Bridge Project is a major transatlantic venture for Director Sam Mendes, Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Old Vic in London whose Artistic Director is Kevin Spacey. Sam Mendes directed the play with a stellar cast comprising of Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack, Rebecca Hall and Ethan Hawke.

We were thrilled to be able to watch another excellent production which was presented by The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT). In fact, we were so grateful that our EXCO members, Hana and Narimah prepared a token of appreciation for SRT. We have always enjoyed watching plays, both local productions as well as international ones. We hope that we will continue to enhance our cultural awareness and appreciate the Arts on top of improving our English Language and Literature through more of such productions.

Here is a brief summary on the play.

King Leontes of Sicilia begs his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia, to extend his visit to Sicilia. Polixenes protests that he has been away from his kingdom for nine months, but after Leontes's pregnant wife, Hermione, pleads with him he relents and agrees to stay a little longer. Leontes, meanwhile, has become possessed with jealousy--convinced that Polixenes and Hermione are lovers. He orders his loyal retainer, Camillo, to poison the Bohemian King. Instead, Camillo warns Polixenes of what is afoot, and the two men flee Sicilia immediately.

Soon, Hermione gave birth to a daughter named Perdita. Perdita was not accepted by King Leontes because he taught that Perdita was not his daughter. Perdita was raised by a shepherd. After 16 years, Perdita fell in love with Florizel, Prince of Bohemia, who is the son of Polixenes. Polixenes did not accept Perdita because she is poor. Both of the lovers, Perdita and Florizel ran away to Sicilia to get blessing from Leontes.

At Sicilia, Leontes was moaning in pain because he has lost both his son and wife. When Perdita and Florizel came to Sicilia, many thought that Perdita looked like his wife. The King showed Perdita the sculpture of the Queen. Unexpectedly, the statue moved and came to life. Actually, the queen did not die. She lied about it to teach the King a lesson. In the end, everyone lived happily especially Leontes.

SPH Media Workshop

On 25th of March 2009, the Creative Circle members, together with Ms Lynn See, went to the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) to attend a talk by The Strait Times Media Club. We were given notebooks and a biography on Yip Pin Xui, a paralympic who was born with muscular dystrophy.

Once we settled down, Mr. Peter Khoo, the Vice President and the Head of the Editorial Projects Unit, welcomed us warmly and then introduced Mr. Marc Lim, the News Editor for the Sports Section. He explained to us, that "apart from being a sports nut, sports writing is conductive to develop writing skills."

He got inspired to be a sports journalist, after his many failed attempts to be a pro athlete. Different sports pictures were shown and he told us that pictures and headlines for an article should be interesting so as to capture people's attention. He mentioned that we should be prepared with materials. For example, pictures, interviews and ideas for a headline.

We were taught methods of interviewing and the steps to writing an interesting article. As student reporters, we paid full attention as where else can we get better tips other than those coming from the editorial board of our national newspaper, Singapore Press Holdings? One of the basic steps to writing an article is to have information about the topic that we were given. After he gave the explanation, Yip Pin Xui came. Each and every school got a chance to interview her.

Yip was born with muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder that slowly breaks down the muscles, and a nerve condition that affects eyesight. When she was 5, she started swimming to improve her health and strengthen her muscles.

Nevertheless, by the age of 11, she had lost her ability to walk and had to use a wheelchair. The youngest of the three children in her family, she studied in Ai Tong Primary School and Bendemeer Secondary School. Yip started swimming competitively when she was 12 years old. After losing her ability to kick, Yip switched from the front crawl to the backstroke.

Yip was away from school a lot and it was difficult to juggle school and swimming. She got sick often when she was in Secondary 2 and this caused her not to experience much of secondary school life. When she was in Ai Tong Primary School, she got bullied a lot and not a lot of people were supportive of what she was doing at first. Theresa Goh then became her motivation.

Yip has a special diet by her own personal nutritionist and has hydration tests every morning. She has 12 sessions of training per week before her paralympics. She felt confident then because she could beat world records in trainings. Her parents have no objections when she does competitive swimming, in fact, she even offers 20% of the monetary award to her parents.

Yip thinks that the press is too serious and causes her to feel demoralised sometimes. Now, she gets more media exposure than before and is recognised on the streets. Yip Pin Xiu left the auditorium with her famous last words: "Nothing is very impossible."

Sports Day 2009-EVG Olympics

On the 13th of March 2009, Evergreen Secondary School organized its first-ever EVG Olympics. Instead of having it at the stadium, this year, the Sports Day was held as a sports carnival in the school premises. Other than having only track events, the PE Department under the lead of Mr. Taufiq Sanusi has introduced new events, mainly in the form of games; Inter-House Staff Telematch and Inter-House Students Telematch.

Through EVG Olympics 2009, our Vice Principal, Mrs. Theresa Lim felt that the change of the location of the annual Sports Day reflected the theme of 'Metamophorsis.' This has benefitted most of the students as there were more varieties of activities, in turn, leading to more school participation. She also "hopes for more fresh changes in the following years so more students will participate actively."

As most EVGians are aware, Green House has been the defending champion since year 2006! According to Mr. Shahril, the ex House Master for Green House, "the secret to their consecutive victories is the cooperation from other teachers and the students’ enthusiasm."

Asian Civilisation Museum

On the 27th of March, The Secondary One classes visited the Asian Civilisation Museum as part of their National Education Learning Journey. The primary aim of this visit was to understand the culture and history of civilization in China, India and Southeast Asia better.

People have lived in Southeast Asia for thousands of years in close harmony with nature. Till today, their culture and objects still display the many signs of this intimate relationship. The Asian Civilisation Museum uncovered the many mythical and real creatures that inhabit Southeast Asia and what they mean to the people.

8th February on an early Sunday morning, Mr Chan, Mr Viknesh, Prefects, Photographers as well as us, the Roving Reporters from Creative Circle, were at Block 852 Woodlands Street 83 ready with a truckload worth of hampers with one mission, to do our part for the community.

The hampers which have been generously contributed and decorated by EVGians were neatly displayed and ready for distribution to the recipients.

This is a shining example of our Vision of " A Thinking and Caring EVGian with Enterprise, Vision and Graciousness."

Well done EVGians for your commendable effort!

Ms. Ellen Lee, who do you think benefit most from this event?

The residents have benefitted the most. It is important to let them know that they are not alone. With the care and concern from the contributing members, the needy residents will not feel that they are alone.Being part of a community, we should help one another, regardless of race or religion.

This event will prove to be a learning experience for the students. The Principal and teachers can impart moral values to the students. Simultaneously, the students will also be able to show their care by actively contributing to the community.

What do you think of the hampers made by our students?

They are indeed a thoughtful gesture. This shows that the students are concerned about the community. Even though there is an economic crisis and Singapore is going through a difficult time, we are still willing to help each other out. Such concern must persist, come what may.

How do you think schools should improve in our contributions to the community?

I think the schools should continue to show concern in many other more practical ways, such as providing tuition for students in primary schools. Having students at different levels of the education system interacting, the older ones can help guide the younger ones academically, as they have the experience and knowledge. Education is paramount to achieve social progress. We do indeed possess the relevant resources and man-power, and should therefore deploy them accordingly.

Yes, the school is showing that they care for the community and is reaching out to the community. They are reaching out to the community that the school is a part of.

Yes, actually we have invited other neighbouring schools to events such as this. Actually, schools like Riverside have contributed by donating newspapers and selling them in order to donate money to community.

How do you feel about today's event?

Oh, it feels great.This feeling cannot be expressed even in a thousand words. Just seeing their smiles upon receiving the hampers, touched me.

How do you think this year's event is different from last year's?

Oh well, I see more helpers and especially more hampers . I think some classes even donated more than one hamper. If I'm not wrong, we have up to 4 hampers from a class alone(3 Achieve).

How do you think this event could be improved?

Well, they can have this event at the school if they prefer .But other than that ,everything is good.

Why do you think this event is important to the school?

The hamper giving activity is one of the ways Evergreen Secondary School is reaching out to the community.This event has become a recongnisable symbol to the school since it started in 2007, and through this,parents are also ensured the students receive a well-rounded education through interactivity in society.

What do you think of the hampers made by the student?

I believe the students have put in a lot of effort in making the hampers and the response from them has been fantastic .

What happens to the hampers which are not collected?

They will collect their hampers at their own time.

Is there any difference between this year's and last year's events?

In comparison to 2008 ,there has been a greater participation and involvement among the students,with more contributing to the hampers .More basic items were used in retrospect to last year , when mostly snacks made up the entire food hamper! The event may be further improved by holding it biannually instead of only once.Perhaps we can hold it during Hari Raya rather than just on Chinese New Year.The CCAs groups could also pitch in to improve the event.

Resident A: I am very happy as this is the first time I'm receiving a hamper. I think that this event is good and helpful. This is because my wife and I are childless

and old. We are unemployed and my wife has a mental illness.Hence, I believe this hamper will allow us to have a fruitful and enjoyable Chinese New Year.

Resident B: I am very happpy. I find that this event is very good and caring. I certainly hope that there will be more of such events.

Resident C: I am very glad. I feel lucky to be able to have the hamper as I think that there are many more people who are still suffering from hardship. I hope more of such events would be organised as your contributions will be recognised and other schools will follow suit.

Resident D: I feel that this event is very good and more of such events will be organised as the reception is not bad. I think helping others is good. Perhaps, one day I will be doing this also.

Resident E: I feel happy. I like it, and I think this is something the school should continue doing. It gives the students a sense of responsibility since they actually have to do it themselves. I think that the students should include more canned food and cooking ingredients instead of snacks.

We can socialise with the members of the community. We can also help those in need and at the same time, establish a good reputation of our school.We can help the residents with their financial problems and this will lighten their burden.

I feel proud as I can help other people who are in need. I also find it meaningful to help other people.It makes me feel happy.

What are some of the difficulties you faced when you organised this event?

Some classes handed in the hampers without their class names and there was a time when we had no space to store all the hampers.

How do you think this event should improve?

Maybe more time should have been allotted for the hampers to be ready.Instead of providing hampers, the school could conduct lessons or provide worksheets for students who cannot afford tuition.

Do you think that the class which has decorated the tallest/nicest hamper should be given a prize?

Yes, they do deserve a prize. The school could include a system of points for the classes in which the class with the nicest/tallest hamper, gets the highest score and the class with the most points at the end of the year wins the 'Best Class' award.

Chinese New Year Celebrations 2009

The Chinese New Year Concert for 2009 was extravagant to say the least.
It started out with the Chinese Orchestra performing three songs called 'Golden Snake', Gong Xi Fa Cai' and 'Cow for Sacrifice'. The three songs were played beautifully and it filled our hearts with joy.

The next performance was the Lion Dance. It was an amazing and very exciting performance. The performance was done with great effort and the "lion" threw some sweets and cabbages at the very eager audience. It was very generous of them to provide us with sweets and we appreciate them for performing at our school.

After the Lion Dance there was a Chiang Kair Tong Education Support Fund Presentation. Selected pupils from our school were awarded vouchers for their commendable effort for being excellent pupils of Evergreen Secondary School. Next, was a karaoke performance by our EVGians. Both songs were sung by the winners of the Mother Tongue Week Karaoke Contest. They sang the songs melodiously and it was clear why they were chosen as the karaoke winners.

After the karaoke performance was a performance by the Chinese dancers. They danced very gracefully and touched the hearts of the crowd. They were given a loud round of applause from the audience. Next up, was the Tarian Kuda Kepang which is also called the Horse Riding Dance. This dance was performed by none other than the Malay dancers. They danced energetically and made everyone excited because of the mesmerizing dance.Last but not least, was Mass Singing. Everybody was singing along and had a wonderful time and this ended the Chinese New Year Celebrations in an upbeat note.

Mother Tongue Week

Evergreen Secondary School annually organizes a Mother Tongue Week, where we learnt about the importance of the rich cultural heritage we share. This learning process is experential as we participate in a series of programmes and activities designed to maximize our appreciation of our Mother Tongue language. From Chinese Calligraphy to Knowledge Quizzes, we were treated to a variety of fun filled games and activities.

One of the activities held was the Karaoke Competition.

Many of my friends and schoolmates signed up as participants. Being proactive in class, I was selected by my Mother Tongue teacher who requested for me to be with the host of the event, alongside my friend, Zahidah, from 3 Dynamic. Everything proceeded smoothly as planned. Many EVGians actively participated in the competition and many of them were from the different levels. Even Secondary One students took part in it. I was glad that they were courageous enough to sing in front of a large crowd.

The judges of the Karaoke Competition were Ms Mazlinda, Mr Shahril and Mr Suhaimi. The categories for the competition were divided into two: Individual and Duet. The winners for the

Individual Category are:

First place: Siti Nur Afiqa from 1 Integrity
Second place: Rozaihan from 4 Integrity
Thrid Place: Ferryandi from 4 Enterprise

In Duet Category:

First Place: Atiqah Abdul Kassim & Syafikah Zaini

Third Place: Siddiq Jumari and Azly Nasri from 4 Dyanamic and 4 Thinking respectively

As the host of the event, I enjoyed myself immensely, and was simultaneously able to glean much experience from it.

Polytechnic Visits for Graduating Students

In conjuction with the Education and Career Guidance Programme, our school has organised several visits to various polytechnics for the graduating classes from the 7th to 9th of January. The aim of these visits is to allow the graduating classes to have a closer look at the environment of various polytechnics and find out the courses offered there. By visiting the various polytechnics namely- Republic Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, as well as Singapore Polytechnic, the Secondary 4s and 5s get to experience and explore the life of studying in a polytechnic as well as helping them better plan their future.

The visit to Republic Polytechnic conducted on the 7th of January, was really beneficial to most students. Through the wide range of display and booths set up by both polytechnic students and staff members, EVGians were able to understand the many aspects of the courses offered by playing interactive games. Having spent almost 3 hours there, EVGians enjoyed themselves immensely while walking around and viewing the attractive displays.

The visit to Nanyang Polytechinic on the 8th of January was equally beneficial . The exhibitions put up there were very captivating. The EVGians who were present managed to learn much regarding the courses offered there, like Biomedical Sciences and Engineering.

Through these educational visits, EVGians did indeed gain a lot of useful information about the various polytechnics, making it easier for them to choose their future educational institutions. The students definitely look forward to more of such visits in the near future.

Sec 2 at Dairy Farm Adventure Camp

On the 13th to the 16th of January, the Sec 2 students went camping at Dairy Farm. Here is an interview of our Sec Two students.

We went to Dairy Farm and assembled there. Before dinner, we were assigned to our groups. The next day, we had to wake up very early for breakfast and went for Area Cleaning. We were tasked to clean the toilets and we decided to use plastic bags as our gloves. After that, each group went for different activities such as dragon boating,

Bukit Timah Hike and high elements.

At night, we went for a night hike. It was so dark, plus, it was challenging because we could not bring any torchlight to aid us.

On the third day, some of us went for high elements and team building activities. We learnt how to work together as a team and overcome our fears. At night, there was a camp fire. All the groups did their own cheer and we did some comical stuff. Marcus, one of our camp chiefs, taught us some cheer and groovy dance moves. We were all laughing away as our teachers were asked to dance along to 'Shake Banana'!!!The night ended fast as we were having a great time.

The following day, we were asked to pack our bags after breakfast. Then, we were given our camp T-shirts. We were asked to line up in our classes and claim our valuables. Last of all, we were sent back to our school by bus. We were so happy that we could go home at last.

During the Secondary 1 Orientation,reporters from Creative Circle, Narimah, Faizah, Nurain, Zakiah and Illa went around the school to interview students and parents on their thoughts for the Sec 1 Orientation.

Mount Kinabalu

My Journal for the training prior to the Mt. Kinabalu trip

13th October 2008:

Today, we started off the day with a simple warm up by Ali. Next up was Mr Jay Lim 's work out, who proudly announced that these exercises were just a warm up for him. Well, this was a totally new experience for those who have never been under him during physical training. We did the ‘Duck’ walk, hoping across the parade square, periodically jumping to change the position of our legs.

During the debrief, he told us that all those sets of exercises were about mental and physical endurance. During the games section, it was a disappointment as we didn’t cheer on for our fellow team mates. Only after Mr Lim cheered on for them, then we started cheering for our team mates. We were told that if we were going to conquer Mount. Kinabalu, we were going to have to work as a single team and then we can overcome any obstacle and can conquer the mountain with little difficulty.

15th October 2008:

For today's physical training, we began the day with some light stretching. Thanks to Mr. Lim's previous exercises, I now find it much easier to complete his warm up routine. I certainly hope to carry on like this, slowly but surely building up my physique. Under their guidance, I know we can reach the summit as a team. As part of the training excercises, we were required to climb up many flights of stairs today. I also felt that climbing up stairs was indeed easier, as the warm up helped us get used to the contraction and expansion of muscles when climbing up the stairs. We managed 10 sets up and down the block.

20th October 2008:

Today's training was quite tiring as I did not have a good night sleep the previous night. But no matter how tired we were, we were determined to do our best. For today's training, we did sprinting and some staircase jogs. The point of these excercises was to help us get aquainted with climbing up a steep incline. Simultaneously, this helped develop our thigh muscles which were important to the climbing process. All in all, it was quite a good training. I could feel my body getting use to the required level of fitness.

22nd October 2008:

Today we had a different trainer-Mr Shahril. it was not as tough as Mr Lim's training. But in Mr Shahril’s training, he placed greater emphasis on the simple stretching that we can do to prevent our muscles from having cramps. His routines focused almost solely on our thigh muscles.

31st October 2008:

For today's training, we went to Bukit Timah Hill, where we did a light warm up led by Mr Viknesh. Next up, we followed Miss Joanna Lee up the hill, group by group. The teacher commented that we should expect worse terrain and weather than the current one when we are at the mountain. This trip allowed us to bond better with our team mates, as we kept up a constant flow of encouragement with one another. It was with a sigh of relief a few hours later, that we finally conquered Bukit Timah Hill.

My Journal for the Mt. Kinabalu trip

Day 1: 9 November 2008 (Sunday)

I arrived at Changi Airport early in the morning with Stella and Yuying. upon arrival, we headed to Macdonalds for breakfast because I was hungry! After breakfast, we assembled at Terminal 2 to collect our climbing equipment and to take photos with our dearest principal Mr. Chan. We boarded the plane at 8am and took an uneventful 2 hour plane ride to Kota Kinabalu.

Upon arrival, we took a bus to an Indian restaurant for lunch! We sat in our groups and chatted and joked a lot. We created our group name -VICTORY! We also playfully gave each other nicknames, where Aidil from NCC will be S.A. which stands for Small Aidil, Aidil from NCDCC will be M.A. which stands for Medium Aidil and Ali will be called L.A. which stands for Large Ali. After our lunch, we went to a shopping mall to purchase necessary amenities.

We then proceeded to the Fairy Garden Hotel where we got to stay for that night. We washed up and had our steamboat dinner. We decided to liven up the atmosphere with a group cheer, but it did not work out because the cheer was a last minute decision and we had too little time to prepare. Eventually, we went back to our rooms and packed our day bags. We had to wait for teachers to inspect our bags, and ensure that everything was in proper order before we could sleep.

Day 2: 10 November 2008(Monday)

Woke up early for breakfast. Took a bus to the base and started our climb up Mount Kinabalu . It was essential that we finished the ¾ of the hike up the mountain before evening. I took a walking stick with me and led my group up the mountain. The climb was indeed a challenge, both physically and mentally. Everyone appeared energetic at the beginning of the climb.but slowly started to get tired. The abrupt change in weather was unbearable for most of us, and the freezing temperatures forced all of us to wear windbreakers and I saw some even with ponchos and gloves.

We rested periodically, but continued our climb group by group despite the mounting exhaustion. During the climb, our group kept up a constant stream of encouragement. Many of my peers wanted to give up. However, I felt that endurance was the key to success in life and this climb, and that the time, effort and everything should not be wasted. After persevering with the climb for a few hours, all the groups finally reached the ¾ point of the mountain and took a well deserved rest at the Laban Rata Restaurant. After we were debriefed, we washed up and promptly fell asleep at 8pm.

Day 3: 11 November 2008 (Tuesday)

I did not sleep at all! It was near impossible to do so in the freezing cold. The following morning, everyone had to don their headlamp, gloves, boots, thick socks, cabarina and etc. We assembled and went off group by group again. Everyone I met appeared tired and very restless, their feet shuffling and hands stuck into their side pockets.

I doubted that many of us would be able to make it to the summit. But I was wrong. The journey to the summit was shorter, but proved to be a more challenging climb because of the cold weather and the steeper steps. The sunlight, or rather, the lack of it, also forced us to be extremely cautious with our steps. The thinner air gave many altitude sickness when climbing and some of my team mates ended up vomitting.

However, we all kept encouraging one another, reminding ourselves incessantly that we were going to make it to the summit very soon. The determination and effort that all of us put in , paid off. We had managed to climb up the mountain and see the sunrise. Everyone had pushed themselves to the limit to the furthest, redefining the extent of our physical endurance and mental strength.

The moment I reached the summit, I was treated to a panaromic view which was too beautiful to describe with words. A great rush of elation comingled with overpowering relief filled me as I stood at the top of the world! Like the song, I stared down on creation, and was amazed by the features of the physical landscape- the rolling hills and the azure clouds that surrounded us. I truly felt humbled by the majesty of nature.

We rested at the Sayat Sayat Hut for a while and continued our climb down the mountain all the way to Raban Rata. Many of us were exhausted,and our fatigue delayed the schedule and upset the teachers. Though it was significantly easier to climb down, everyone's legs still hurt a lot. After reaching the base camp, we took a bus to Balsam Café. After a filling breakfast, we took a bus to Casuarina Hotel which was by far, the most comfortable hotel compared to the previous two. We had our dinner at a seafood centre and there was a cultural dance! I really enjoyed the dance a lot. We went back to our hotel and slept soundly for the first time in days.

My Reflections about the Mt. Kinabalu trip

I learnt that if we put our minds and hearts together, anything can be accomplished no matter the setbacks.To reach the summit, we need perseverance, endurance, courage and an adventurous spirit. Once I reached the top, there was a moment when I felt a great sense of satisfaction. I felt as if I was at the top of the world, it was definitely one of the achievements of my life.

The 7th Prefect Exco and their teachers in-charge, Mr Viknesvaran, Mr Shahril and Ms Chala organised the much-anticipated inaugural Prom Night for graduating students of 08'. Our Principal and Vice-Principals together with teachers also graced the event. This night was aptly themed, Ladies & Gentlemen. Graduating students looked charmingly elegant and suave beaming with bright smiles and they brought much enthusiasm to the dinner and dance. Halim of 4 Respect and Daryan of 4 Integrity, the emcees of the night, entertained the crowd with their amusing antics. The highly-coveted Teachers' Choice for Prom King & Queen went to Brandon of 4 Achieve and Vidya of 4 Aspire.

Mid Autumn Festival

The Mooncake Festival, also known as the Lantern festival, was celebrated in the mid of September. The Moon Cake Festival is usually celebrated by the Chinese. Shops were brightly lit and decorated to attract customers. Mooncakes, piglet biscuits, pomelos and other types of food and decorations were sold at the shops during the festival. One example of a place that has shops like that is none other than Chinatown. People from all over Singapore will come to Chinatown just to buy food, decorations, lanterns and more to prepare for the upcoming festival. They drank Chinese tea after eating the mooncake because the mooncake is too sweet. On the 12th of September, our teachers explained about the Mooncake Festival and we tried our best to answer 10 riddles. Those who solved the riddles got a mooncake as a reward and that concluded the Mooncake Festival lesson organised by the Mother Tongue Department. Teacher's Day & Be Yourself Day

On Friday, 29th August, which was the last day of Term 3, we celebrated Teacher's day in conjunction with Be Yourself Day. Both the concerts were hosted by the 6 finalists of 'Emcee King & Queen,' a public-speaking competition, organised by Creative Circle. It was a very special day for the teachers as it was a day for the students to celebrate and thank our teachers for imparting their knowledge to us and helping us achieve our dreams from the day we started our journey of learning. Also, on that day, many ex-Evgians came back to meet their teachers whom they missed dearly and brought sweet tokens of appreciation as Teacher's Day gifts.

For Be Yourself Day, everyone was given a theme and they were to dress up accordingly. Sec One's theme was 'Singapore's Heroes,' Sec Two's theme was 'Sports,' Sec Three's theme was 'Occupation,' and finally Sec Four's theme was 'Singapore's Past.'It was not hard to tell that Evgians were so excited and thrilled to be in their costumes. Students came to school in all kinds of clothes and accessories. Some were weird and funny yet some were very formal. There were even students who came in suits and ties for the theme, 'Occupation'. This year's 'Best Dressed Class' Award went to 4 Dynamic.

Immediately after the concert, the teachers had a sumptuous lunch at Sakura, Clementi Woods.

National Day Celebrations

On the 8 August 2008, our school celebrated National Day, the most memorable day for Singaporeans. Mr Chan, our school principal, also celebrated his birthday together with Singapore, our homeland. The school was decorated with colourful flags and banners. The day started with some classes assembling at the first and second level of our school, this was done s0 that Evgians got a better view of the parade held by the uniform groups and the school band.

After the parade, we sang the National Anthem proudly which was played by the school band. Then, we went back to our classrooms for the second activity which was to complete a piece of group work on an article and present it to the class. We also wrote an acrostic for Singapore and included a reflection. Next, we proceeded to the school hall for the concert. It started off with Mr Chan's welcome speech and the National Day Message. We continued with wishing 'Happy Birthday' to Mr Chan and then we watched a National Day video and sang our favourite National Day songs. The prefects were on stage, leading us with the singing. Even some students stood up and waved in rhythm. After the entire day, we were happy and proud to celebrate National Day in our school which is the Centre of Excellence for National Education.

NE Festival 2008

On 30th July 2008, our school hosted the NE Festival for North Zone. It was a huge success. The Guest-of-Honour for this event was Ms Yeoh Chee Yan, Second Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.

The festival started off with a fusion dance, in the theme of RICE, by our Chinese and Malay Dancers. Next, six students from different schools in the North Zone attended various workshops in our school and shared their experiences with us.

National Educational Stories ll (NESTll), a collection of original stories written by Primary and Secondary students in the North Zone, was also launched that day.

The Movers & Shakers Gallery was officially opened by the Guest-of-Honour. The gallery features 10 Founding Fathers of Singapore who have made significant differences in Singapore's development.

There were also events like Story-telling, Movies Watching and watching digital clips on Singapore's Past.There were traditional food from different ethnic groups; Potong ice cream and kachang putih were included too. The traditional food and the setting of the environment brought back memories of Singapore in the early 50's and 60's. We even had a professional caricaturist stationed at the new Movers & Shakers Gallery.

To end off the day, there was a prize presentation for participants, comprising of Story Writing, Animation, and Illustration and Photo Stories competitions. Mrs. Marian Chia, Cluster Superintendent North 5 Cluster giving a speech

We are proud that our school hosted the National Education Festival and we thought that the school looked grand and marvellous with the banners, balloons, flowers and all the ethnic decorations. We look forward to the next National Education Festival.

Road Run - 23rd May 2008

Many Evgians, dressed in their own house t-shirts (Red, Green, Orange or Yellow), gathered at Bishan Park for the annual Evergreen Secondary School Road Run on 23rd May 2008.During this event, even the Evergreen Secondary School Principal, Mr Chan, joined the students in completing the road run to show his support for the event. During his interview on this event, Mr Chan commented that this year's event was better as compared to last year's. He even said that the students settled down much faster this year. According to Mr Chan, the road run had benefited us by keeping us healthy, physically fit and also keeping our body in good shape. We were also told that he had enjoyed the road run very much because he had the chance to enjoy the fresh air with the Evgians and staff.

During our Vice Principal, Mr Lee's, interview, he commented that he felt great about this year's event as the students were more cheerful and engaging in the event. When Mr Lee was asked what he thought were the benefits of this road run, he told us that the road run had helped the students gain resilience and develop their character.

Honours Day 2008

On the 28th of March 2008, Evergreen Secondary School had its 9th Honours Day. The efforts of teaching, non-teaching staff as well as students eventually paid off as the event was successful. The parents, Evergreen's alumni; who were here to receive their awards and student audience were seated as soon as they were called in. The participants waited eagerly for the arrival of the Guest-of-Honour, Ms Claire Chiang of the famed Banyan Tree Gallery (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

The event started off with the parade of Evergreen's very own uniform groups. The Guard-of-Honour for this year's Honours Day was the Red Cross Youth (RCY). They performed well displaying their teamwork and strict discipline.Apart from the Red Cross, the other uniform groups also did their part wonderfully. They consisted of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) and the National Civil Defense Cadet Corps (NCDCC).

The Unit Sergeant Major (USM) of the NCC praised everyone's effort in making this event a successful one. "The parade commander and the contingent commanders did a good job. The cadets themselves also performed pretty well. The event is very successful and I'm very happy," declared Vincent Lim of 4 Achieve who was also the Contingent Commander for NCC.

They marched to the tune played by Evergreen's band which was led by Aref from 4 Dynamic. Aref is the Drum Major for Evergreen's band which is also known as the EVG Winds. He was really impressed with the improvement showed by the members as compared to the previous years.

"These kinds of events are a good exposure for students to improve. I'm glad that everyone took this opportunity seriously," he added.

The concert started off with the singing of the school song where everyone present in the hall had to stand. It was followed by Mr. Chan; the Principal's speech. Ms Chaing's speech was next. The concert then went on with the Chinese Orchestra's soulful performance. The Gamelan and the Malay Dance Club had a combination performance where the Malay Dancers danced to the tune played by the Gamelan members. The dancers performed a Javanese dance which was indeed very graceful.

The Creative Circle reporters had a chance to interview the Chairman of the Malay Dance Club, Roshazmira from 4 Integrity. She has been dancing for Honours Day for three consecutive years. She felt really great and honoured for the opportunity and trust bestowed upon her.

The Chinese Dance Club also performed for the concert.

The concert lasted for about an hour before the guests had their refreshments. The students and parents had their reception in the canteen. Meanwhile the teachers and the Guest-of-Honour went to the NE library for the reception. In the library, they were entertained by the wonderful tune on the piano played by a Secondary 3 Achieve student, Japheth. The band joined in moments later. Lastly, the Secondary 3 Express pupils sang a medley of a few songs.

An interview with Ms Claire Chiang was conducted by the Roving Reporters of Creative Circle.

When asked about the highlight for this year's Honours Day, she said, "I'm impressed by the cultural show and music performed by the Secondary One pupils. Maybe next year they can use cooking pots and also forks and spoons!"

She also advised EVGians to set their targets high and to be the best that they can be in order to strive harder. EVGians are also advised to set aside time and to put in their best effort so that the goals of 'Stronger, Higher, and Faster' can be achieved.

Mrs Lim, the Vice-Principal of Evergreen Secondary who was also the advisor for 2008's Honours Day, felt that the event was great and that it showed the energies and efforts put in by the teachers and students. She added that this event was to celebrate the school's successes and achievements.

Overall, this event ended with a bang and it was a day to remember as everyone pitched in to make this event successful.

FYI:Feed Your Imagination

During the month of May, the English Language and Literature Department organised trips to the Esplanade for the Upper Secondary students. Feed Your Imagination (FYI) Programme aims to develop passion and interest for the English Language and the Arts and to also enhance the appreciation of our Singapore's icon. Evgians had the opportunity to watch dance performances and go on a guided tour of the world-class facility.

The Secondary 3 students got to watch a conceptually-based movement, 'Kaleidescope' by MI Arts Ltd. that helped them understand fundamental elements of dance and how dancers use space, time, shape, energy and emotion to create complex and appealing choreographed works. Some students were even called from the audience to take part in an activity where they could move the dancers' bodies to whichever position they wanted so as to form an artistic pose.

On the other hand, the Secondary 4 & 5 students were treated to a hip-hop performance, 'It's All That' by The Trinaqi which is a tribute to Singapore's hip-hop scene and a celebration of the special blend of unique cultures and talents that make up what it is today. The students learned about how the hip-hop culture has been adopted and adapted to include local flavour. Life stories of influential hip-hop dancers were also told. Some of the students even tried their hands at hip-hop moves and surprised the audience with a performance! To top it off, the students were rollicking in laughter from the second the show started as Sheikh Haikel's sense of humour was just too hilarious to handle.

After the performances, all the Upper Secondary students went for a guided tour around the Esplanade. They were very lucky to be able to enter the grand Esplanade Theatre and they even caught a glimpse of the props for the upcoming 'P. Ramlee the Musical!' All in all, the Upper Secondary students learned tremendously about the Arts, Language and Culture from this programme.

Sports Day 2008

It was an energetic morning for Evergreen Secondary pupils as they headed to Yishun Stadium for this year's Sports Day. We had to sit on the field while waiting for the morning assembly to begin. After singing the National Anthem and taking the pledge, we were separated into our 4 different house colours, Red, Green, Orange and Yellow. :)
Right after everyone has settled down, our Principal officially marked the starting of the event. The cheerleaders of each house took their positions in front of their houses to lead their mates during the Cheering Competition.

Green House was acclaimed the champion for the Cheering Competition. While the cheer was going on, the athletes got themselves ready for their individual race. Our Principal, Mr Chan Yew Wooi, was the one who started the race by firing the gunshot. Our runners were enthusiastic to begin the race. The scorching sun did not bring down the runners' spirit but rather, it fueled the confidence in them.
We then had a friendly competition with other neighbouring schools. Our school emerged as the champion and this was a great and proud achievement for us. The final race was between the teachers of the different houses and some of the pupils' parents even joined in the race.

A new event this year was one where every EVGian from every house went down to the tracks to participate in a Mass Relay. It was so great to see 100% participation from the entire school!Finally, after tallying the scores for the overall competition, Green house was finally declared as the House Champion for this year's Sports Day. This sure brought satisfaction and great victory to them. It may be a very hot day but the students still enjoyed themselves with big smiles on their faces.

The Diary of a Dairy Farm Adventure Camper

Day 1.

Firstly, when we reached the camp site at the Dairy Farm Adventure Centre, we gathered at the canteen.
We spent about an hour or so there where they checked if we had any food or drinks in our bags.
Next, we went to our dorms where we put our stuff and then went back to the canteen again.
We spent about half an hour or so having lunch, the food was okay.
Then we went to this area near the back of the canteen to play games.
The first game we played was called Human Entanglement. W e had to form a circle and hold the hands of the person in front of us. Then, we had to untangle ourselves, it was really confusing, we had to bend and turn and even cross over someone’s arm.
Next, while waiting for the other group to finish their game, we played charades at the corner of the area.
It was really funny because it was really hard to act out what they wanted us to say.
After the Charades, we continued to play the second game, called the Leap of Faith, it was like rope skipping, but the one we played involved 5 people.
We had to, one by one, jumped in until there were 5 people rope skipping.
It took all of us about an hour to finish the whole game.
After the Leap of Faith, we continued to the Low Elements. These included The Wall and The Nitric Crossing.
We went for a campfire preparation next, we joked, learned cheers from others. Needless to say, it was hilarious.
Later on, we had dinner. Everyone was very happy to have dinner because it was a tiring day and we were all starving.
At around 10p.m , we went for a night hike near Bukit Timah, we were separated into groups of ten.
I thought the hike was quite scary, the forest was eerie and gloomy and my imagination ran wild.
We ended up at a huge field of grass where we could see huge hills.
We sat there for quite some time, finally, we started to go back to the camp site and then had supper which was curry puff. Then, it was time for bed.

Day 2

A lot of people were really hungry because of the extremely tiring hike.
After that, we went for the High Elements.
Firstly, we had rock climbing, then abseiling, next was the CRC.
The CRC included the Postman Walk, Cargo Net, Charlie Chaplin, Wild Woozy, Swinging Beams and the Tension Traverse.
When we finally finished, it was almost dark, and we went for dinner.
After dinner was the most exciting part of the camp! THE CAMPFIRE!
Every class cheered and shouted loudly to win.
After the campfire ended, we went for supper and showered.
Finally, it was time for bed.

Day 3

Everyone woke up in the morning and started packing our stuff.
Carrying our heavy bags, we went for assembly.
Firstly, we were debriefed and then we had a morning stretch.
Breakfast was next, this was followed by an area cleanup.
We cleaned the toilets, picked up the stuff people left behind and also washed the floors.
Then it was time for us to leave and say goodbye to Dairy Farm Adventure Camp.
With our heavy bags and heavy hearts, we walked out of the gate and hopped onto the bus.

Sec 1 Orientation Campfire 2008

On the 4th of January at about 7pm, Regina and Aidil, the 2 emcees, welcomed the staff, parents and students to the 2008 Sec 1 Campfire. Mr Taufik was invited to ignite the fireball and once the campfire was flaming bright, the Prefect Exco kicked into action.

The highlight of the Campfire was the Sec 1 Class Performance. Each class was given about 5 minutes to perform their interpretation of this year's school theme, "Stronger, Higher, Faster." Some classes decided to cheer as one while others chose to sing or perform a skit. In between the Sec 1 Performance, the members of Prefect Exco entertained the audience by singing campfire favourites such as, "Father Abraham" and "Peel Banana."

They even encouraged the parents to join in the fun by participating in the EVG Wave. It must have been nerve-wrecking for the Sec 1 students to perform in front of so many people including their parents. However, the juniors did a good job and learned 2 important lessons that night, 'Confidence' and 'Teamwork.'

We welcomed our newest members of the EVG family with a variety of activities.

The CCA Recruitment Exercise was well on the way as CCA leaders were busy coming up with innovative and creative ideas to recruit new members.

Rugby tried to make it as "hands-on" ("heads-on," in this case) as possible...

and NCDCC did not want to extinguish hopes of increasing their total strength

and we can always depend on NCC (Land) to blend in with the crowd

while pretty Malay Dancers tried their hands at Gamelan

and the Sec 1 EVGians responded positively and signed up eagerly during the Recruitment Exercise

and it didn't hurt if they were rewarded with a lollipop or two, along the way...

as concerned parents looked on...

The Prefect Exco, on the other hand, was busy preparing for the Sec 1 Orientation Campfire.

EVG Annual Staff Dinner 2007

The theme last year was 'Glitz and Glamour' and glitzy and glamorous it was.

The location? Holiday Inn Hotel, Singapore.

The teachers attended the Annual Staff Dinner, all dressed up, posh and let's not forget the essential, must-have glitterati.

The staff looked all relaxed from the much-deserved break during the November/December holidays and geared up for the next academic year in 2008.

Up on stage, we have the nominees for 'Best Dressed' Staff...*drum roll* please...

and the Mr. Glitz Award goes to Mr. Shahril and Ms. Glamorous Award goes to Mrs. Julia Raj! Congratulations!
